It has now now been 6 months since Tony and Judith retired and they would like to thank all their customers for their continued support in frequenting their restaurant. However due to unforseen circumstances the restaurant is no longer open.

Welcome To The Townhouse

A BRIEF HISTORY

The Town House building is situated in the heart of Oldham Town Centre and was built in 1854.

It is a Grade 2 Listed Building and is one of only two buildings in Oldham built with stone quarried from Oldham Edge.

In 1854 it would have enjoyed a prominent position surrounded by few other buildings, the nearest being the original Town Hall built by the Police Commissioners in 1841.

It is reputed to have been Oldham's first Post Office and since then has been a Gentlemen's Club and for most of its existence after that a paint and wallpaper warehouse.

This was its use when taken over in 1979 by Tony and Judith Greenwood to become the present Townhouse Restaurant and Cocktail Bars.

Extensive works were needed to convert the building into the restaurant and bars as they are today, but care was taken to retain all the original outside features and to ensure that the interior reconstruction, furnishings and decoration were in keeping with the age and original prominent status of the building. It is of interest to note that in the upstairs function room (The Cartref Suite) there is still an original window (unfortunately cracked) which is etched with the names of those who constructed the building.
